A new poll suggests most Quebecers aren’t anti-pipeline.A survey by Leger, done for the Montreal Economic Institute shows most residents would prefer to import oil from home, than from Mexico, Saudi Arabia or Algeria.“And that’s quite striking,” MEI President Michel Gagnon-Kelly, “Fifty nine per cent of Quebecers prefer, all things being equal, that all oil come from Western Canada.”However, around the same amount would also like Quebec to explore its own oil resources.“Right now, 100 per cent of the oil consumed in Quebec, comes from outside of Quebec,” Gagnon-Kelly said.By a wide-margin, 41 per cent of respondents also picked pipelines as the safest way to transport oil.Tanker trucks were a distant second choice at 14 per cent.“It’s not surprising considering, the horrible accident that occurred in Lac Megantic a while ago,” Gagnon-Kelly said.He said the results are refreshing, considering recent anti-Energy East comments by Quebec Mayors.“It shows that sometimes the political leadership is not always in sync with the views of the general public,” he said.
