first_img Brad James FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailLOGAN, Utah-Utah State star sophomore javelin thrower Sindri Gudmundsson was named as the Mountain Region men’s field athlete of the year Friday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.Gudmundsson, an Icelandic national, will be competing in the javelin as the West’s top seed at the NCAA Track and Field championships commencing Wednesday and running through Saturday at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Ore.Gudmundsson stated he is proud of his accomplishment as did his head coach, Matt Ingebritsen, who said “he’s a special athlete and I can’t wait to see how things turn out for him [next week] at nationals.”Gudmundsson is the only athlete in both Utah State and Mountain West conference history to eclipse 80 meters in the javelin.The only javelin thrower ranked ahead of Gudmundsson in national annals is Mississippi State’s Anderson Peters, but the Grenadian national threw only 243-06 at the East regionals at Tampa, Fla. whereas Gudmundsson had a toss of 255-05 at the West regionals at Sacramento, Calif.
