If there was any snow left in the woods, it was wiped out this week by temps in the 60s and a soaking rain. Sure, this type of weather is not completely out of the ordinary in mid-January here in the South, but it is still a bummer when it hits. A few days of mild temps and a good rain can wipe out a season’s worth of hard work put in at ski resort. Being outdoorsy people our activities are dependent on a wide arrange of factors, the most obvious being the weather. With this in mind, our attitude has to be “When one door closes, another door opens.” When a January warm spell slams the door on any backcountry snow expedition we still have the open door of the woods to keep us sane. Shed the winter blues by getting out on the trail. The bare trees will open up vistas you have never seen, providing a whole new experience to a trail you only trek during the traditional seasons. A new perspective has the potential to jumpstart even the deepest seasonal malaise so don’t waste this opportunity. Take a hike, or better yet, hang onto the last traces of that New Year’s resolution and lace up the running shoes for a trail run. A little pain, a little reflection, and a whole lot of sweat – it’s going to be in the mid-50s across the region – will go a long way for your piece of mind.I’m sure you have your home trail to run, but one of our favorite trail systems is on Raccoon Mountain outside Chattanooga, Tenn. Stunning views await those who tackle these trails used for the Scenic City Trail Marathon 15 minutes from downtown, so hit them up this weekend. You won’t be sorry.View Larger Map
The 50-year-old Wilson, in his fifth season with the Steelers, was taken to a hospital before being airlifted to UPMC Mercy Hospital for treatment. His condition was not immediately available. The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation.Wilson did not travel with the team on Sunday when the Steelers faced Denver in the first round of the AFC playoffs. Offensive assistant Harold Goodwin worked with the running backs during Friday’s practice.Steelers president Art Rooney II said he was “saddened” by the news.“We know that he has the best medical care in the country treating him,” Rooney said in a statement posted on the team’s website. “The entire organization is praying for Kirby to have a full recovery and we will be by his side through this difficult time.”UPMC Mercy has the area’s only Comprehensive Burn Center. It’s the same hospital where quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was treated following a motorcycle crash in 2006.Wilson, who is from Los Angeles, played running back and wide receiver at Illinois before playing briefly in the Canadian Football League. He served as running backs coach in New England, Washington, Arizona and Tampa Bay before joining the Steelers when head coach Mike Tomlin took over in 2007.Popular with the players because of his high-energy approach, Wilson guided running back Rashard Mendenhall to consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and spent this week helping third-year back Isaac Redman get ready for his first playoff start after Mendenhall was lost for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.“He’s really taken me from a practice-squad running back to a running back that’s capable of playing in this league,” Redman said of Wilson. “He had a lot to do with my development, being able to recognize defenses and being able to be just a complete professional in how I go about my life every day.”The players were alerted to Wilson’s condition during a team meeting Friday, and his players realized something was amiss when Wilson—a notoriously early riser—was not at the facility looking at film.(Associated Press writer Joe Mandak in Pittsburgh contributed to this report.) 23 May 2008As the police and the army move to contain the violence against foreign nationals in parts of the country, a growing number of South Africans are taking action against xenophobia, and stepping up to help the thousands of people displaced by the violence.“The recent upsurge of violence in Johannesburg calls for a response from everyone, not only government and the police,” the Movement For Good says on its For Good website. The For Good website offers practical ways for ordinary people to help the victims and to bring a permanent end to the violence.Places where members of the public can drop off food, blankets or clothing, where they can go to volunteer their help, or how to make cash contributions, are all listed on the site – along with stories of what For Good members are already doing in response to the situation.South Africans have been responding generously to calls by relief aid organisations to help provide emergency relief to those affected by xenophobic attacks. The South African Red Cross Society said the support of the public had, by Monday, enabled it to provide assistance to more than 6 000 people. Red Cross staff and volunteers, working in shifts and “often in dangerous and difficult conditions”, have been providing first aid and distributing food, blankets and hygiene and baby kits.More donations are still needed, however, and the organisation has urged the public to visit the Red Cross website or call their national office on 021 532 0202 to find out what and how they should donate.Meanwhile, a march in solidarity with foreign nationals it to take place in Johannesburg on Saturday, starting at the Pieter Roos Park on Empire Road, near Hillbrow, at 9am.SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publicationor on your website?See: Using SAinfo material
The post-relational document database CouchDB reached its milestone 1.0 release today. Couchio, the corporate sponsor of the free open-source project, boasts that speeds in the new release are up 300% over version 0.11.0.In addition to the speed increase, Couchio cites the following new features:Microsoft Windows supportAuthentication system – write CouchApps without having to create a user modelReplicator options – flexibility to use replication to build custom systemsThe authentication system, which will make development easier, is probably the most significant of these features. We covered the NoSQL last year in our article Is the Relational Database Doomed? Certain web applications, such as web based instant messaging, have scalability needs that push the limits of existing SQL solutions, so NoSQL solutions like CouchDB have emerged. CouchDB has powered the web based IM client Meebo since 2008, according to Couchio. According to software architect Enda Farrell, the BBC is building a content management system using CouchDB.Another advantage to using CouchDB is offline access. CouchDB is designed for disconnected use, meaning it could be used to make web apps usable offline and have them sync with a database server while online. Some web developers are calling for support for CouchDB in the HTML5, which has support for offline storage and SQL already. Others are already building portable “CouchApps” using CouchDB and HTML5.CouchDB’s SQL based competitors include VoltDB (covered here) for scalability and SQL Lite for offline use.Other notable NoSQL projects include Cassandra and MongoDB. What on earth were Bollywood actors Shreyas Talpade and Mahie Gill looking for in people’s bags in Delhi?Well, Shreyas and Mahie were in the capital to promote their upcoming film Aagey Se Right and did everything to convince Delhiites about their new on-screen roles. While Mahie plays a journalist in the film, Shreyas is a clumsy police officer searching for his lost gun. “I play a laidback cop who has lost his gun,” says Shreyas. “And Mahie is a glamorous reporter who is trying to help me (find the gun).”Now with a glamorous journalist like Mahie, her oomph factor could come in handy to a silly cop like Shreyas. After all, which policeman sports a trendy watch while on duty? To that, Shreyas has an answer ready. “My dad too was in the police force (in the film). He wasn’t really a good cop; used to take a lot of bribe,” he says. Now that’s a filmi cop in the making!
