The hard-fought rights and empowerment of the Amerindian people seem to be rapidly reversing, according to former Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall.A scene from the Amerindian Heritage celebrations in Kuru KururuHe made these comments during the Amerindian Heritage Day celebration in Kuru Kururu over the weekend.Speaking on behalf of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, the parliamentarian noted that Amerindian Heritage Month is the ideal time to celebrate the history, culture, struggles and accomplishments of Amerindians since they settled on this land.“Indeed, there is much to celebrate. Today, Amerindians have access to nursery, primary and secondary education in their communities. They have access to primary healthcare in their communities; some communities even have access to computers. Today, Amerindians are doctors, lawyers and are in other professional pursuits,” Nandlall told a sizeable crowd. He pointed out that in addition to celebrating, it was also a time to reflect on the struggles and sacrifices which were made to make these achievements possible.“Some of the same problems which our fore-parents struggled against are still affecting our progress,” he stated.Nandlall posited that discrimination, particularly against Amerindians, was becoming rampant again.“Two thousand Amerindians were dismissed within the first month of this Government taking office. There is an attempt by some to rewrite history in order to dislodge Amerindians as the first people who came to this land; computers and solar panels which were purchased for Amerindian communities by our Government were diverted away from the Amerindians by this Government,” he outlined. He noted too that they faced obstacles in hosting the heritage celebrations.“In relation to this event, you are aware of the battle you have had in relation to the venue for this event. Non-Amerindians have hijacked from you the ground which you have used to develop over the last 15 years to host this event. They have even attempted to hijack this event from you. But you stood firm and resisted them. They are attempting, also to steal from you, your Community Development Council (CDC),” he stated.Concerns were raised that Government was attempting to hijack the National Toshaos Council (NTC) last year.Former Indigenous Affairs Minister Pauline Sukhai had complained of the failure of the Government to inform NTC members (who are Toshaos) within the stipulated timeframe and hijacked the planning of the conference, which was the responsibility of the Council.Nandlall, however, pledged that the PPP/C would continue to speak out against such injustices and work towards ensuring the eradication of discrimination against the Amerindian population.“I want to assure you that the People’s Progressive Party shall stand with you and will fight to ensure that these facilities are not taken away from you. Therefore, as we celebrate, we must be conscious of what is taking place around us and be vigilant to protect our gains,” he emphasised.
13 September 2002President Thabo Mbeki urged the world’s leaders, gathered in New York a day after the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks on the US, to reaffirm their commitment to the United Nations and its Charter as indispensable to world peace.Speaking at the United Nations headquarters during the opening session of the 57th UN General Assembly, Mbeki described the multilateral system of global governance as “the only viable international response to all our challenges . Fundamentally, this is the only credible response to the challenge of globalisation and the need to enhance human solidarity to meet our common needs.”Mbeki was addressing the gathering in his capacity as chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement and the newly formed African Union, and president of the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development.Mbeki spoke immediately after US President George W Bush, whose administration has threatened to attack Iraq, accusing it of failing to comply with UN resolutions adopted in the wake of its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.Laying out the United States’ case against the current Iraqi regime, Bush pledged that the US “will work with the UN Security Council to meet our common challenge”, but warned that “if Iraq’s regime defies us again, the world must move deliberately, decisively to hold [it] to account.”Mbeki said the Non-Aligned Movement is committed to the peaceful resolution of all conflicts, “including those pertaining to Palestine and Israel, as well as Iraq, in keeping with the resolutions of the United Nations”‘, adding that these were “urgent tasks to which this organisation must respond”.Two years ago, Mbeki said, the world’s leaders, through the United Nations Millennium Declaration, “reaffirmed our faith in the [United Nations] and its Charter as indispensable foundations of a more peaceful, prosperous and just world.“None of those who spoke from this podium knew that a year after they had pledged to use their energies and talents to provide a meaningful life for all, peace in this country and the rest of the world would be brutally challenged by the murderous terrorist attack of September 11.“We meet a day after the first anniversary of that fateful September 11. We have a collective duty to reaffirm our united resolve to create a world free of the fear of terrorism.“We have a solemn obligation to give real meaning to the message of hope we proclaimed in the Millennium Declaration. It may be that future generations will say that if we have learnt anything at all from the horrendous events of September 11, it is to the accomplishment of these tasks that this General Assembly should dedicate its efforts.”Africa’s response to its past and presentTurning to his Africa, Mbeki said the continent had risen to the challenges of the Millennium Declaration by forming the African Union (AU).“The African Union (AU) is Africa’s practical and determined response to its past and present, in favour of peace and stability, democracy and human rights, co-operation, development, prosperity and human dignity”, Mbeki said.“Its programme for the socio-economic revitalisation of our continent is the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad), which must help us to eradicate poverty and underdevelopment throughout Africa and, within the context of the African Union, end Africa’s humiliation as an object of charity.”Mbeki told the gathering that the AU had agreed to the establishment of various institutions, including a peer-review mechanism, “which must help us ensure that we honour our commitments democracy, human rights and good governance”.Mbeki called on the UN to work closely with the AU in modernising Africa’s economy, dealing with the continent’s “intolerable debt burden”, ensuring access for Africa’s products in the markets of the developed world, fighting Aids, malaria and tuberculosis, and working against environmental degradation.Shared prosperity through sustainable developmentReporting on the World Summit, which took place in Johannesburg from 26 August to 4 September, Mbeki said the Summit had “confronted the stark reality that billions of people across the globe are poor, and boldly confirmed the need for us to collaborate for a shared human prosperity through sustainable development.“We agree that this goal can be achieved because we are inspired by the knowledge that the resources needed exist within the global community.”Delegates from around the world enshrined the decisions they took in the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation and Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development, “to ensure that the billions of people who have placed their fate on our collective shoulders have a concrete programme of action to realise the goals contained in Agenda 21 and other documents adopted by the world community of nations during the last 10 years.”Mbeki said that UN member states had already committed themselves to making available the finance, technology and capacity building needed for implementing the Johannesburg Plan.“It is critically important that we implement everything we agreed, acting with the necessary sense of urgency.”Mbeki reminded the gathering that, two years ago in the Millennium Declaration more than 150 heads of state and government resolved that “the central challenge we face today is to ensure that globalisation becomes a positive force for all the world’s people.“Through both our global and regional programmes”, Mbeki said, “we can and must ensure that globalisation indeed becomes a valuable process, which will bring about sustainable development and prosperity for all.”SouthAfrica.info reporter
26 July 2010 Journalists from across the world have hailed Cape Town as one of the world’s friendliest and most beautiful cities, according to a report compiled by the city’s tourism agency. Cape Town Tourism interacted with 750 international journalists during the 2010 Fifa World Cup, taking them on a number of tours to show them the various faces of the city, the organisation’s chief executive Mariette du Toit-Helmbold, said during the release of the report last week. ‘World in one city’ Freelance journalist Vincent de Vries from the Netherlands said the best of the world could be found in Cape Town. “I have been everywhere, from Mongolia to Vancouver, from Beijing to Rio de Janeiro, but my visit to Cape Town, during the World Cup Soccer, where I stayed for more than five weeks, ruined my ambition to see the whole world in 10 years,” De Vries said in the report. “Why? Because I fell in love with the Mother City! Now I don’t have to travel around the world any more, because Cape Town is the world. “The V&A Waterfront is like Europe, the food is perfect like in Asia, the weather is fantastic like South-America, the people are as friendly as in Australia and the ambitions are as high as in the USA,” De Vries said. “I fell in love with this marvellous city and will return time and time again.”‘A truly special place’ Duncan Castles, who writes for Britain’s The Observer, said he had travelled and lived in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, but had never been to a city that made such an immediate impression on him. “The setting is breathtaking, and waking up each morning to Table Mountain’s flitting mood is a joy,” Castles said in the report. “Then you add in the friendliness of the people, the quality of the food and wine, and Cape Town’s sense of fun, and you have a truly special place.” Edward Lawrence of CBS TV Network in the US said he had initially had a “huge fear” of visiting South Africa because he had always heard that it was dangerous for American tourists, but that his urge to see the World Cup had made him throw caution to the wind. “From the time I stepped off the plane in Cape Town, I felt welcomed by the people there – from the cab drivers to the bed-and-breakfast owners,” said Lawrence. “I was able to take advantage of being a tourist in Cape Town, and it was amazing. I saw and experienced so much and will definitely return to Cape Town.”‘Beautiful’ Zheng Daojin of Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, described Cape Town as “one of the most beautiful places on earth … My impression of the beauty, of the nature and the people of this city will stay with me forever. Thank you for the most fantastic time.” Andres Kudacki, a photographer and filmmaker from Argentina described the city as “amazing … It is one of the most photogenic cities in the world, and I was surprised and amazed during my stay here. From the Waterfront to Khayelitsha – I loved each part of Cape Town.” BuaNews

They do the job and they do it well. Really low cost even in comparison to lower price merchants, the shade works very well with my hair (dim to mid blonde) and they truly feel more powerful than most grips i’ve bought. 10/10 would surely advise – primarily to these of you who are vulnerable to dropping them like me.They are a huge amount of money of normal hair grips or bobby pins that are a very low cost selling price for a 200 of those people.LazyFrog® 200pc Brown Hair Grips Clips Bobby Kirby Pins Clamps Set Salon Waved Slides Wholesale Set : When i brought these, i wasn’t expecting much but after using a few i was over joyed. For the price they are amazing. They grip hair and they match my hair colour. Low-cost for what they are and i haven’t missing all of them however which is often a reward.Arrived in a number of times and in after piece. They are also tight so they won’t tumble out of my high-quality hair. Was purchased to do a few people hair for a wedding day terrific price for dollars recived fairly speedily satisfied with itam.Superior products but could be superior. Great fast shipping and delivery, arrived in excellent issue and appeared like photo and as described only down fall is they are a little flimsy.Sadly these are not good quality, but you get what you pay out for. Most don’t have the little rubbery bits to stop the grips digging into your head. Would recommend purchasing far better kinds.Terrific, perfectly priced and prompt support. They are not terrific good quality and if you want first rate hair grips that you should not bend in odd strategies randomly when you might be attempting to use them, you can have to pay out additional money for that. But for the price tag these are alright, though they’re not a great deal superior than the ones you can get from pound land to be sincere. I won’t be purchasing these againhowever, they did some really immediately and successfullyin conclusion- you get what you spend for.Bought for my daughter and is incredibly satisfied with them. I was a little bit nervous about the high-quality but they are a really great guality. If you use bobby pins for everything i might propose this pack because they’re high high-quality and you get. This is an outstanding value. If you use bobby pins for anything at all i’d suggest this pack simply because they’re substantial quality and you get two hundred for an unbelievably minimal selling price. It is really also a terrific to buy this quantity for the reason that bobby pins do feel to go missing at alarming fees. This products did what it reported on the tin. Genuinely terrific hair clips and so many of them wonderful value.I ordeed these for my niece and she reported they are really excellent and employs them all the time. They arrived on time and have been accurately what i anticipated, however i dropped a star since as i used them i discovered how conveniently they bend when having them off the cardboard and it is pretty challenging to get them back again into the suitable placement- they also stick to eachother effortlessly. Continue to usable nevertheless and i am incredibly joyful .There is just not significantly you can say about hair grips but they are great excellent, properly packaged. Extremely rapid delivery and tons for a affordable price tag. Will surely invest in once more as significantly far better price than most spots.I truly believed the hair clips would be a minimal bit larger but in any scenario, the hair clips retains my hair with a actual powerful grip so it would make up for my anticipations to the dimension of the hair clips. These clips are alright for the cost but the black has by now occur off them quite a large amount. I use eight at a time, most times and use the similar eight. Considering the selling price i would be expecting those. I’m absolutely sure i will purchase more of the exact the moment i have utilized all these or shed them.

Ticket sales for the upcoming Ohio State men’s basketball season, originally scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday, have been postponed because of “technical difficulties,” said Brett Scarbrough, senior director of ticketing for OSU. The e-mail informing students of the launch of ticket sales was sent Monday morning, but a significant number of students did not receive the information. “We realized the problem this (Tuesday) morning that the e-mails had not broadcast,” Scarbrough said. “It had sent about 49,000 e-mails at the point where we made the decision to postpone the on-sale.” He said that makes up about 70 percent of the e-mails that were going to be sent. Once the e-mails were stopped, officials realized the problem. “Specifically it relates to how the e-mail servers at both ends of the pipeline are talking to each other and allowing the flow of e-mails to come through,” Scarbrough said. Shortly after 4 p.m., the athletic department sent out a press release stating, “Tickets were supposed to go on sale today, but technical difficulties caused the sale date to be postponed.” Other efforts to inform students included a tweet by Assistant Athletic Director of Communications Dan Wallenberg that read, “Student tickets for Ohio State men’s basketball will go on sale at 4 p.m. next Tuesday, Oct. 12. Sale today was postponed-technical issues.” Despite the efforts, some students did not hear of the change. “I still signed on at (4 p.m.), still not knowing it was even postponed,” said Jake Schaurer, welcoming director for the OSU Sportsmanship Council. A message on the university website informed Schaurer of the delay, but he never got the initial e-mail announcing that ticket sales were beginning. “I was fortunate to have contacts that are involved in athletics that told me it was going on at (4 p.m.), but I would have had no way to know otherwise,” he said. Those contacts included the student seating group Block “O.” “We did a reminder … to Block ‘O’ members about the availability of the tickets,” said Josh Daenens, president of the organization. “It really had nothing to do with the athletic department.” The university is taking the time to work out the server problems, officials said. “Instead of 24 hours or 48 hours,” Scarbrough said, “we wanted to make sure there was plenty of time to get the servers in working condition.” Chelsea Castle and Zack Meisel contributed to this story.
Following Sunday’s 109-94 win against Michigan, the Ohio State men’s track team will bring “The Dual” banner back to Columbus for a fourth straight time. “I was very pleased with the team’s performance today in cold and windy conditions,” coach Robert Gary said. “We had some good marks, but ‘The Dual’ is really about competing man versus man. And in that regard, I thought we did a fantastic job even after we had the team win secured in the scoring.” The Buckeyes won 11 of 19 events. “We performed very well,” senior Aaron Roberts said. “Obviously, the conditions were not ideal, but we were able to come out with the win. We have to continue getting better each week as our focus turns to Big Ten.” Junior Michael Hartfield took first in the long jump and triple jump, finishing with jumps of 7.35 meters and 14.73 meters, respectively. “In regards to my personal performance, I think I did an OK job,” Hartfield said. “Although I wasn’t able to jump to the marks I wanted to, I was still able to come through and place high in all three jumps and help win the dual as a team. Also, to get that dual pennant for coach Gary’s birthday gift.” “The Dual” takes place at one indoor meet and one outdoor meet between OSU and Michigan. OSU is 6-2 in the event since it was reintroduced in 2008. The track team will compete next at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Polytan Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
