first_imgA crowd of supporters, local and national representatives turned out for the third ‘Solidarity with Sudan’ protest of the month in Letterkenny. The peaceful gathering at Market Square last Saturday was organised by 2019 local election candidate Thoiba Ahmed in response to the violent political crisis in her home country.Ms Ahmed’s protest highlighted the recent series of massacres that took place across Sudan by the Janjaweed militia in their campaign to suppress the uprising against toppled dictator Omar Al Bashir. “Thoiba Ahmed was a candidate in the County Council elections in Letterkenny, and I got to know and respect her during that campaign,” says Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh who showed empathy when listening to Ms Ahmed talk of the atrocities occurring in Sudan.Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh and Thoiba Ahmed at the Solidarity With Sudan protest“I am here today to support Thoiba in her call for peace in Sudan, an end to violence, and a return to dialogue with a view to establishing democracy and lasting peace in a region that has suffered the loss of almost half a million lives in a few short war torn years. I hope that today’s event will help to raise awareness among our own community to the plight of ordinary people in Sudan,” said Cllr Kavanagh said.Councillor Gerry McMonagle attended the protest because “for me, it’s in my DNA; I was raised educated of the history of Ireland, the military rule and colonialism.” “As Irish people we can relate with what is happening in Sudan; any State in the world where physical force and military intervention has been exercised has never been successful. I fully support the people of Sudan and their right to democracy and self-determination” he added. Thoiba Ahmed, Thomas Pringle TD and supporters at the Solidarity With Sudan protestThomas Pringle TD said: “It’s vitally important that we as Irish people support the struggles of the people of Sudan in trying to have a government that looks after the needs of their people.”“A government that works on behalf of the citizens is the least that people demand and can expect. We in Ireland should expect the same,” Pringle TD added.Thoiba Ahmed at the Solidarity With Sudan protestMs Ahmed confirmed that another protest will take place at Letterkenny Market Square on 29th June from 2pm-4pm. No event is planned this week due to the Donegal Rally, but demonstrations will continue ‘until the demands of the people of Sudan are realised’, according to Ms Ahmed. She commented: “By recognising our shared humanity, we build connections that overcome the divisions of cultures, religions, and ethnicities. There’s a shared sense of responsibility when it comes to responding to the cries of help and confronting injustice.”Local support grows at Sudan solidarity protest was last modified: June 17th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:letterkennyprotestSolidarity With Sudanthoiba ahmedlast_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Ben Klick, Stark CountyAs long as everything goes as planned, today will be our last day of harvest. I have 55 acres of beans to cut and we are done. We are beyond ready for it to be done. It has been a roller coaster of a year and a downhill roller coaster of a fall. We are not that upset with how the yields turned out after the weather we had but there have been little issues with things going wrong along the way and we are definitely ready to be done.Planting date was very crucial this year. The later crops were not nearly as dry and that was a lot more money in drying costs. There was quite a bit of re-adjusting the machine from the early corn to the late-planted corn and it slowed down the harvest. The double-crop beans needed August and September rains that they didn’t get. The yields were all over the place. They got planted later than they should have been and it got dry for them at the wrong time. This year they weren’t really worth cutting. The corn yields really varied by farm and soil type. We planted some fields that we should have waited a day or two longer last spring but we had to plant when we could. As a young farmer I see things I get stressed about but then my dad tells me that he has been seeing these kinds of things for years. The ground is not as favorable as I thought it would be but we are getting the weather so we can start the fall jobs that we should have been doing a month ago. We have chicken litter to spread, lime to spread and barns to clean out.We usually shoot to be done two weeks before Thanksgiving, and here we are still working at harvest the week after Thanksgiving, but we were still blessed with a pretty good harvest and nothing disastrous went wrong. It is what it is.For the rest of this week’s reports, click here.last_img read more

first_imgMany in the tech world have been eagerly anticipating mobile payments. NFC-powered payments won’t be commonplace for a while, but Apple’s adoption of the technology would be a critical milestone in that journey. Google has already planted its own NFC seeds with Google Wallet. The mobile payments service recently removed one of its biggest obstacles by adding support for all credit and debit cards. Other players, from startups like Square and LevelUp to credit card companies like Visa and MasterCard, are carefully carving out their future pieces of this pie as well. Once the iPhone gets NFC, the two biggest smartphone platforms will support the technology, which many retailers have already been supporting. For users who own compatible handsets, mobile payments are inching closer to everyday reality. Retailers are starting to jump on the bandwagon. Apple’s PassBook, included in iOS 6, is clearly just the first iteration of its mobile wallet. 2. Use Your Phone as a Game ControllerApple’s most recent NFC-related patent refers to iOS devices being used as game controllers. It sounds like a fun – and inevitable – use for NFC-equipped iPhones and iPads. But it’s only the beginning.  NFC allows game developers to bridge the gap between virtual worlds and the physical one. NFC-enhanced versions of popular mobile games like Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja have already provided a glimpse of the future. In Angry Birds Magic, for instance, players can unlock new levels and rewards by waving their phone in front of NFC tags that can be found in official merchandise and in specific physical locations. Whether by tapping their phones against NFC-enabled stickers or through direct device-to-device communication, gamers can expect NFC to change the way they play. 3. Control Home Appliances From Your PhoneIn addition to turning iOS devices into game controllers, Apple envisions a world in which iPhones and iPads can be used to control household appliances. Televisions are an obvious example. You can already use your iDevice to control set top boxes like the Apple TV and Boxee Box, and Apple reportedly has much bigger plans for living rooms. NFC offers another potential way for smartphones to connect with networked appliances. Televisions are just the start. We already have connected thermostats, lightbulbs, window shades and refrigerators, and the list of connected household appliances is bound to grow. Need to know which groceries to pick up at the store? An NFC chip in your smart refrigerator could tell your iPhone which items you’re low on and import them as a list into Reminders or another app. 4. Use Your iPhone as a House KeyNFC is already used in electronic door locks, but typically with proprietary key cards that, frankly, are just another item to lose. As long as we’re merging our wallets with our phones, why not get rid of a few keys as well? NFC-enabled smartphones can unlock front doors and offices. Of course, there are serious security considerations that need to be ironed out before this is feasible, but it’s nothing a little facial recognition or mobile fingerprinting solution couldn’t fix down the road. Tags:#mobile#web Related Posts What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … john paul titlow Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfacescenter_img Another use for NFC that’s already being tested is as means to pay for mass transit. Last year, Germany’s primary mass transit agency – the second biggest in the world – announced that it would roll out NFC-enabled mobile payments. Meanwhile, New York City started testing a similar system in a pilot program launched two years ago. That initiative doesn’t utilize NFC, but once the technology is more widely adopted, expect to see it used in subway terminals around the world. Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Apple device update season is near and, like clockwork, the rumor mill has kicked in high gear. The latest evidence points to a September unveiling of the next iPhone, a smaller version of the iPad, and the long-rumored Apple HDTV. Those last two are debatable, but the iPhone 5 is all but certain, and it’s expected to include the hot technology known as near field communication. From payments to gameplay, here’s how an NFC-equipped iPhone could change your life.Near field communication is a short-range wireless protocol already used by some smartphones and other devices. A younger cousin to RFID, the technology is like a lower-power, shorter-distance version of Bluetooth. That might not sound like a big deal, but it opens up exciting possibilities.  People who watch Apple’s patent-filing activity know that the company has been thinking about NFC for a few years. While the technology has already found its way into a few popular mobile handsets, its arrival in the iPhone is worthy of special attention, if only because of the popularity of Apple’s line of smartphones. The company is uniquely poised to popularize this new technology because its devices are so widely adopted and its user experience is typically polished to perfection.  Here are things an NFC-enabled iPhone could let you do:1. first_imgThese easy to follow timelapse tips will get you on your way to shooting breathtaking, eye-grabbing footage. With the explosion of DSLR cameras over the last few years, timelapse has seen a surge in popularity and accessibility. When executed with skill and a healthy dose of patience, timelapse video can be an incredible way to bring visual interest to your projects. How do I create a timelapse video?Practically speaking, there are two different ways to shoot timelapse – either with a DSLR camera or video camera. In this post, we’ll explore tips and techniques for shooting with both. First, let’s take a look at a great timelapse example from pro timelapser Randy Halverson:There are two basic approaches when shooting a timelapse. A ‘real’ timelapse would be shot with a DSLR or point-and-shoot camera taking hundreds (or thousands!) of images with longer exposure times. The second approach would be to use a video camera. However, as you can imagine, this technique can take up a lot of space on your memory card and computer in post.DSLR? Point-and-shoot? Video camera? When shooting a timelapse, you will have better luck with a DSLR camera than any other point-and-shoot camera. As far as video cameras are concerned, GoPros have become popular choices for their compact size. You can literally film a timelapse anywhere! The image image quality of a DSLR will be superior to that of a point-and-shoot camera. More importantly, you have more control over the quality of your image. Typically A JPEG file format is better to use than Camera RAW, as it will take up less room on your memory card.Filmmaker Rob Hawthorn put the GoPro HERO3 Black up against the Canon 60D to show the differences between the cameras in timelapse situations. Here’s what he found:What equipment will I need to bring? There are some obvious pieces of gear that you’ll need for timelapse projects.Tripod/stable mounting surfaceIntervalometers (DSLRs) or time controller device (remote control)Extra memory cardsExtra batteries (or A/C power)Preston Kanak, a well-known timelapse pro, says, “One of the biggest challenges when shooting a time-lapse is gear management.” Check out this video where he goes over his timelapse kit piece by piece, and then head over to Kanak’s website, where he goes even more in-depth on the subject.Timelapse Pro in ActionNow that we’ve covered some basic ins and out of timelapse, let’s watch Spanish cinematographer and Shutterstock contributor Enrique Pacheco put it all into action. Here’s a great video from Shutterstock that follows Pacheco behind-the-scenes during a shoot.Pacheco is full of good timelapse advice.
