At the NJS Francis Building in Grand Turk, there will be pomp and pageantry as the country records, even more ceremoniously today its first female Premier in Hon. Sharlene Robinson. It has been just over two months of closure for the honourable house, but at this first sitting of the first meeting of the first session of the 11th Legislature of the House of Assembly, it is expected to be capacity seating and among those observing the proceedings, will be visiting dignitaries, a contingent from The Bahamas Government, led by Deputy Prime Minister, Philip Davis. Reverend Derek Hamilton is scheduled to open the House this morning at promptly 10am in prayer, immediately following will be the Clerk of the House with the Proclamation. The oath of allegiance happens next for both the new Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon Dwayne Taylor and his deputy, Hon Karen Malcolm. This oath will also be taken by the other House members, which number 19; 15 elected and four appointed, two by the Governor. Joan Bassett will sing the National Anthem; Michael Dean will sing the National Song; Barbara Johnson will sing God bless this House and the Governor will deliver the Speech from the Throne, which is the PDM Administration’s plan for the country and promise to the people of what it intends to accomplish over the next four years. Remarks will come from the new Premier, Hon Sharlene Robinson… from the new Leader of the Opposition in the House, Hon Washington Misick and there will be opportunity for each member to speak in the two minute speeches item on the agenda. Today, work finally begins for the PDM, which won in a landslide victory at the polls on General Election day, which was exactly two weeks ago on December 15. Constitutionally, this opening had to happen within 15 days of the results of that national polling and it means the Turks and Caicos will start the year 2017 with a new party in charge of country affairs. The nation resoundingly voted for the ‘change’ the PDM pitched; 10 seats went to the People’s Democratic Movement while 5 seats remained with the PNP. The Opening of Parliament will be carried live on National Radio, on television – PTV8 we are told and live streaming online.

Although Chinas economy has been covered as slowing down and affecting other countries, there is no denying its market is still massive. Over the past few years, Western countries and companies have mostly exploited that market by importing low-cost goods, but some argue Chinas consumer market is the place to be for small businesses.Deb Weidenhamer, the chief executive of $140m (£91m, €126m) firm American Auction told IBTimes UK the consumer market is still booming in China and Chinese consumer behaviour is very different to trends spotted in the US and UK.In China … no ones talking about the slowdown in the economy at all, she said. Chinese companies that we work with are paying as much as 30% more for salaries in the last six months and I think that for someone whos looking to sell into the Chinese economy, the emerging middle class is 300 million right now, its projected to be 600 million by 2022.Even if there is a slowdown in growth, the Chinese economy and consumer market is expanding very rapidly still, Weidenhamer said. Its …l mind boggling how much growth there is and how much market share there is yet to be had.Her firm helps small and medium enterprises (SMEs) enter the Chinese market by offering their products on the Chinese version of the online auction called iPai. Weidenhamer said that, not only the environment for small businesses in the UK, but also the situation in China is very encouraging. She said: In China, there is a concentrated effort to make foreign companies coming in and for that to be much more simple. The advantage of offering products to an emerging market in auction form is the firm simultaneously gathers information on the consumer behaviour. Weidenhamer discovered trends that contradicted what was going on in UK or US consumer bases. In the case of… Black Sheep Coffee, which is an organic coffee company here, we were testing their product and selling it at auction in China and one of the things we learned about that is that as an organic company, theyre packaging in plain brown paper bags but the Chinese consumer didnt like that, didnt understand that, she said. To them it meant that it was inexpensive when it comes in a brown paper bag. Close

In this file photo taken on 22 January 2017, Alok Madasani, victim of the Austins Bar shooting, listens as Maggie Grillot, sister to shooting victim Ian Grillot, addresses Prayer Vigil at the Ball Conference Centre in Olathe, Kansas. AFPA man in the US state of Kansas who shot dead an Indian immigrant while shouting “get out of my country” was sentenced Friday to life in prison.Adam Purinton had previously pleaded guilty to the racial slur-filled, drunken attack in February last year at a suburban bar and restaurant in the Midwestern state.Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, was killed in the assault in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe. His friend Alok Madasani, also Indian, was injured along with a bystander, Ian Grillot, who tried to intervene. The 52-year-old Purinton received the maximum punishment for the murder, and two sentences of 165 months each for the attempted murders, the prosecutor’s office said. While Purinton would be eligible for parole in 50 years, he was likely to spend the rest of his life in prison. He is also facing federal hate crime and firearms charges, which could result in the death penalty. Purinton has pleaded not guilty in the federal case.Kuchibhotla’s widow Sunayana Dumala released a video statement following the sentencing, describing her husband as an immigrant with “dreams for a better future.””Today’s sentencing in the murder of my husband will not bring back my Srinu, but it sends a strong message that hate is never acceptable,” Dumala said.”I have shared Srinu’s story to highlight the goodness in him with the hope that others will emulate his life and not that of the man who killed him.”International outrageKuchibhotla and Madasani were aviation systems engineers for GPS manufacturer Garmin. Madasani later said the two close friends met regularly at Austin’s Bar and Grill.Witnesses told US media that Purinton screamed racial slurs and shouted “get out of my country!” at the two victims, before opening fire inside the establishment. He was captured later in the day at another restaurant, where he had allegedly boasted of killing Middle Easterners, according to The Kansas City Star.He was charged with three counts — one charge of premeditated first-degree murder and two charges of attempted premeditated fist-degree murder — and pleaded guilty in March after reaching a deal with prosecutors. The shooting came a month after President Donald Trump was sworn into office, and ignited international outrage amid concerns of rising racial prejudice following the Republican’s divisive election campaign. With thousands of Indians visiting the United States every year for work or study — especially high-skilled tech workers via H-1B visas — the attack triggered shockwaves overseas. In the weeks after the attack, Indians were concerned that animus against immigrants was on the rise in the US.Hundreds of mourners marched through the Kansas City suburb in memory of the victim and also honored Grillot. They held a vigil with Hindu, Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh prayers.
